Everyday Science

Almost everything we use in our day-to-day lives involves science in some form. Electric lights, telephones, CD players, computers, automobiles, washing machines... the list goes on and on.

In the kitchen, we keep food fresh in the refrigerator or freezer, and cook it on the gas or electric stove. After we're done eating, we put our dishes in the dishwasher. Later, we might want to warm up a snack or make popcorn in the microwave to eat while we watch a DVD or play a computer game.

We can travel vast distances in a very short time by riding in a car, bus, train, or plane. Journeys that once took months can now be completed in a matter of hours. Science has made the world a much smaller place, and brought together people who may never have had the opportunity to meet each other face to face.

Some of the most amazing scientific discoveries have come in the area of medicine. Imagine what life would be like if we didn't have antibiotics to help fight off infections, or x-rays to help diagnose injuries and diseases. Doctors can even transplant organs to save lives, or do delicate microsurgery to repair nerves or blood vessels, or remove tumors.

We might take them for granted, but all of these amazing appliances, machines and procedures were brought about by scientific research and discovery. Scientific discoveries have made life safer and easier for people the world over.
