Believe it or not, diet, parental behaviour as well as preschool do affect your child’s IQ. How, you may ask? Findings from a research conducted by a team led by a doctoral student in the School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at NYU Steinhardt, involving a technique known as meta-analysis, showed the effect of parental behaviour, diet and preschool on a child’s IQ. This doctoral student, John Protzko, together with Professor Joshua Aronson and Professor Clancy Blair , who have a mastery of information on intelligence, did an analysis on random children from birth through to kindergarten. They assembled them into a database that they referred to as the “Database of Raising Intelligence”.Their purpose when doing this was to learn what does and doesn’t work when it comes to raising people’s intelligence. The advantage of this system apart from the fact that the studies involved a normal population i.e. that which was free of intellectual disabilities, the studies involved randomly controlled trials whereby participants were chosen at random making the process all the more credible.According to Aronson, the importance of the meta-analysis process was to assist them realize the nature of intelligence as well as understand whether or not it can be nurtured at all development stages and in the event that it would, then learn how to achieve it.

The link between diet and a child’s intelligence.

Results from the meta-analysis proved that newborns that took the long chained polyunsaturated fatty acids (Omega 3 fatty acids) had their IQ enhanced by over 3.5 points. Additionally, children born to mothers who took these fatty acids supplements at their time of pregnancy, were also found to have a boost of more than 3.5 points to their IQ. These fatty acids, found in foods rich Omega 3 acids such as fish and plant oils, promote the children’s IQ by providing building blocks necessary for nerve cell development that the body cannot create by itself. Further research is required to confirm whether or not other supplements in our day to day diet such as B-complex vitamins, iron, riboflavin, niacin, zinc and thiamine enhance a child’s intelligence.

The link between preschool and a child’s intelligence.

Additionally, the enrollment of a child with a disadvantaged economic background into an early education system was found to promote the child’s IQ by more than 4 points. The early education system with a center-based component education proved to be better for it helped enhance the children’s IQ by more than 7 points. This promotion is a result of the child getting exposed to cognitively stimulating as well as demanding complex environments,in this case, the early education systems. However, Protzko, Blair and Aronson’s results did not give clarity on whether this applies to all children from various socio-economic backgrounds. They also found no proof to support the theory that early education systems during childhood are more advantageous than those that start later stage.

The link between parental behaviour and a child’s intelligence.

Protzko,Blair and Aronson’s meta-analysis showed that a system whereby the parents took time to participate in teaching their children contributed boosting the latter’s intelligence. The children seemed to exhibit a raise of over 6 points in their IQ.Nevertheless, these interactive reading systems do not appear to have the same effect on children over the age of 4 years. These results suggest that these type of systems may contribute in the acceleration of language development which boosts the children’s(below 4 years of age) IQ during communication.

A summary.

Looking at all the results obtained from the meta-analysis that was carried by Protzko, Blair and Aronson, we identify the link between intelligence and essential fatty acids because latter assists in nerve cell development that results to a raise of the children’s IQ by 3.5 points. We also establish the link between the enrollment of a child to preschool and intelligence for this raises the child’s IQ by more than 4 points. Additionally, the preschools inclusive of language development systems were shown to improve a child’s IQ by more than 7 points. This link was identified because the children’s cognitive abilities get stimulated when they get exposed to complex environments such as preschool. The parents participation in teaching their children also seemed to increase the children’s IQ by more than 6 points. The link between parent participation and intelligence is therefore established because this process tends to speed up language development of the child as the two parties communicate. Conclusively, parental behaviour, diet and enrollment to preschools do enhance your child’s IQ considerably, therefore you are urged to try them out.

As the tenth anniversary of 9/11 draws near, a decent respect for the sensibilities of those involved demands a renewed inspection of the motivations of the attackers. One cannot but wonder at the motivations of the perpetrators. To a large extent, they were trained in technical and scientific fields. In addition, compared to their peers, they generally enjoyed a relatively luxurious lifestyle.

In his book, “Human Being to Human Bomb: Inside the Mind of a Terrorist”, author Russell Razzaque, makes the point that, in every instance, these terrorists were academics trained in literalist, logic-based subjects. They were mathematicians, scientists and engineers. The disconnect between this formalist scientific training and their fundamentalist beliefs is quite striking.

Razzaque would elaborate on his critique. At a conference in Cambridge, entitled “After 9/11, he discussed his own dealings with on-campus Muslim organizations. His own association proved fruitless in a political sense but provided him with some insights into the minds of those enamored of radicalization.

To his mind, young people with a scientific bent are prone to seek black and white answers to all problems, even ones as intractable as “peace in the Middle East.” Spurred to conduct further research, he found, to his surprise, that those students following a decidedly liberal arts curriculum were more resistant to the terrorist group’s perorations.

Ultimately, he was shocked to see several of fellow students duped by the cult-recruiting techniques of these organizations. He watched as social alienation and personal marginalization were used to cull the most vulnerable members of the group.

Their protestations to the contrary, these groups, in no way, provided a free and open discourse. Instead, alternative opinions were actively discouraged. It was demanded that members devote inordinate amounts of time to the cause and unwaveringly believe in the simplistic, utopian ideas promulgated by their so called leaders. An unfortunate turn of events for the vulnerable.

At the end, Razzaque reiterates his final poignant point. Though in college and pursuing an advanced degree, some of our brightest students are subject to pressure that makes them vulnerable to terrorist organizations. It behooves all persons of responsibility to be aware of this threat and to take measures to countermand them.

Republican lawmakers at a hearing addressing the way that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) performs its assessment and evaluation of chemicals to determine their safety, leveled criticism at the agency for their methods of evaluation, the lack of clarity and the length of time it takes to get regulations passed.

The EPA relies on the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), a database containing assessments by EPA scientists of over 540 chemicals, when determining what regulation is required for chemicals and their effect on the quality of drinking water, air quality or other environmental standards. The problem is that these assessments are sometimes quite controversial politically as with the assessment of formaldehyde, a preservative widely used by the chemical industry, and this can cause significant delays in passing regulations.

In a July 12, 2011 press release issued on the EPA website, EPA science adviser Paul Anastas outlined changes that were recommended to streamline the assessment process by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and received by the EPA on April 8, 2011. In response to the NAS recommendations, the EPA, working with their Science Advisory Board, will focus on “quality, transparency and scientific rigor” in IRIS assessments and that a peer consultation will be implemented to lend additional scientific input during the early stages of the process. It will also create an IRIS scientific advisory committee.

Although the improvements met with broad approval, there are still questions about how much additional peer review is necessary to properly prepare IRIS assessments for use as guidelines in establishing regulations.

In 2009, some progress was made to streamline the process after a U.S. Government Accountability Office call for broad transformation of IRIS. Prior to 2009, it was not unusual for assessments to take 5 years or longer. As a result of the changes implemented at that time most assessments are now completed in 23 months or less.

Intel has designed a super-fast universal access to peripheral devices which first appeared on the new MacBook Pro laptops.

Intel’s technology Thunderbolt enables data transmission between computers and peripheral devices at speeds of 10 gigabits per second. New interface delivers more than 20 times the speed compared to USB 2.0 and 12 times compared to FireWire 800th The first computer on which the Thunderbolt was built new MacBook Pro.

It is interesting that the Thunderbolt’s interface can be connected to monitors, and thanks to the adapters will not matter what kind of connector used. In preparing the adapters for DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI and VGA connectors.

Adapters for USB, Firewire and SATA connectors are expected, which will be provided connecting external drives on older computers with Thunderbolt. Enormous bandwidth will enable high-speed connection drives, and even devices with RAID disk array to be in this case behave as if they were integrated into the computer.

The new interface can supply power to peripheral devices connected to it, making it suitable for connecting external hard drives without a separate power supply. Thunderbolt is able to deliver 10W of energy connected device.

Intel hopes that Thunderbolt will replace plenty of older technologies such as USB or FireWire. The rejection of a number of different connections will solve users concerns about how the merger of computer peripherals and computer manufacturers would save the space for the connectors, which will lead to smaller and cheaper laptops motherboards for desktop computers.

When the family is involved in scientific activities at home, should bear in mind two basic aspects: education and security. Although scientific projects can be fun, should be based on standards-based education to provide them with knowledge and skills appropriate to their age and wherever possible, related to matters dealing with science in school. The activities in the home should be professionally designed with safety and educational development of children as basic principles. Remember: even the simplest activities carried out with the most basic of materials can result in damage or danger, so the supervision and guidance of parents is essential at all times.

In Reinventing the Sacred, Stuart Kauffman explores what it means to be spiritual beings in a secular, scientific world. His definition of God is not some massive, omnipotent entity sitting aloft the clouds dictating the workings of the universe, instead it is the creative force of the universe that manifests as bio-complexity and evolutionary leaps, such as the leap that allowed human existence.

sky photo taken from http://lifestylethoughts.com
He holds that we have lost our sense of the sacred and the legitimacy of human existence that is founded in our inherent spirituality. But have we lost our sense? Our common sense? And, if so, how can science possibly help us regain it? How can science help our lifestyles in this modern world?

For the past decade or so, the “soft” sciences have inundated us with doomsday warnings, failings of humanity, the hopelessness of our evolution, and the few successes that we have had are squarely the result of artificial intelligence. With such a catastrophic outlook, it is no wonder that our lifestyles do not embrace the spirituality that is intrinsic to this creative universe. Science would do well to focus on bridging the gap between spiritual and scientific studies. A sort of devolution is in order. In the early days of scientific inquiry, scientists were often ‘men of the cloth.’ They understood there was a sacred brilliance to the natural orders in the world; however, these men were oftentimes so tied to canon law or their religious leaders, they did not empower men or ask the inevitable questions that come from removing “God” from the creation equation.

With all the advances in understanding and comprehension we have made in the past few centuries – from the finite universe and chaos theories to the origins of order and nuclear fusion theory – it is now possible to have a scientific query that gives credence to the spiritual while utilizing methodical, deliberate investigations. If we did undertake such investigations, we would be able to recognize the awesome power of this creative universe that functions no beyond ourselves, but within us and through us in every moment. What would that mean for our lifestyles? By giving back to man the legitimacy of his own existence, the inherent spiritual nature that resides within him, we would see a resurgence of universal action. There would be less waste and more compassion. There would be less destruction and more creation. In essence, we would find our sense again; that fifth sense that is nothing less than sacred.

Using the basic concept taught in science, you will notice that there is a significant difference in your daily life.

But nobody employed by the company at that time had any idea of how quickly Centrica would rise in popularity.

Still relying on entry level printing machines that were simply inadequate for some of the larger jobs, Centrica quickly found that they were unable to meet growing customer demand ? thankfully they recognized the need for change and acted quickly. In 2008 the company made the decision to expand on their services as a typical, run-of-the-mill mail house and delve into the world of cross-media marketing. If done successfully, this would help Centrica individualize itself from its competitors while attracting even more, new business at the same time.

And as they’ve been a long time user of Fuji Xerox products, Centrica new exactly what company to turn to when they needed them most. Offering up their own XMPie Software Suite as a solution for Centrica’s new requirements, Fuji Xerox stepped up to the plate and helped Centrica become one of Australia’s fastest growing companies.

Our bodies were designed to move, since the beginning of time. We have the perfect bodily systems for swimming, running, walking, and lifting heavy weights. Thousands of years ago it was more of a requirement that we move on a regular basis, but since then it has become more of a thing that only some people do.

Working out and benefiting from the workout means knowing your insides and outsides thoroughly. If you do not have a clear understanding of the science that goes into your workout regimen, then you will ultimately harm yourself.

Prior to working out, you should be fueled with plenty of carbohydrates and proteins. Your muscles use these two compounds to keep your body running efficiently. During your workout you will need a considerable amount of water as well. Some doctors recommend at least 20 ounces per hour, depending on your activity level.

When you lift weights, your muscles contract. Muscles that are not accustomed to lifting heavy amounts will be sore the next day, resulting in something very painful for you. Avoid this by stretching and warming up your limbs, so that you can safely perform weight lifting exercises.

Cardiovascular activity is easily one of the most important types of activity around, because it involves your heart and lungs. Cardio activity should increase your heart rate dramatically, which is where strengthening of the heart and body kick in. You will literally wipe out extra calories and start burning harmful fat, especially if you go for longer than 30 minutes. Imagine your heart getting continuously stronger as you run, or walk, or even dance!

Simple working out tips can keep your body safe and healthy, for many years to come. Following them isn’t difficult, and it can make the difference between healthy and unhealthy!
